Ever wondered where all those poor sods go when they're absorbed into a soul gem? It's called the Soul Cairn, a blueish purgatory akin to Coldharbour where the dead are left to fester, forgotten. It's ruled by the Ideal Masters who are believed to feed on the souls given to them by the living while necromancers often call on the Soul Cairn for their undead magic. Inside are dilapidated ruins, a bleak mirror held to Tamriel, and undead husks instead of luscious flora. Rather than ghosts, skeletons, and the usual assortment of undead we face, there are Bonemen, Wrathmen, Mistmen, and Keepers. They're unlike anything else in Skyrim, making the Soul Cairn an even more alien locale.

When you enter the portal into the Soul Cairn, if you've joined Castle Volkihar rather than the Dawnguard you can enter without hassle. However you cannot enter the Soul Cairn as a mortal so if you've stayed with the Dawnguard you need help. Serana offers two options.

When a soul is trapped in a black soul gem and its energy used to power an enchantment, the remnant—the soul itself—is sent to the Soul Cairn. It is a place devoid of faunal life—the only beings that exist there are souls, undead and the rulers of the realm, the Ideal Masters. The Ideal Masters are enigmatic entities that lord over the Soul Cairn, controlling every aspect of its being. It is believed that the Soul Cairn exists so that the Ideal Masters can collect souls and feed on them; [2] some hypotheses even suggest they use the souls as a form of currency to an even higher power. The Soul Cairn is also home to powerful undead beings, which are highly sought after by necromancers.
