The Forgotten Vale is a hidden region of Skyrim that is inhabited by Falmer.
It is a large glacial valley hidden deep within the mountains on the northwestern Skyrim peaks of Haafingar and the Western Reach of High Rock. The valley features its own unique flora and fauna and a handful of caves and subsections throughout. The area also contains a large concentration of Falmer , who have built a series of walkways and camps throughout a canyon leading to the Inner Sanctum , one of the last Snow Elf bastions left. The valley is surrounded by vast, unscalable mountains making it completely isolated from the rest of Skyrim and a part of High Rock. It is split into two large areas which are separated by a narrow canyon.

It is initially only accessible after traversing both Darkfall Cave and Darkfall Passage. It is now inhabited by the brutish, corrupted Falmer and a variety of indigenous creatures: Vale deer , Vale sabre cats , frost trolls , and frost giants. You will visit it during the course of the Dawnguard add-on's main questline, either as a Vampire Lord or as a member of the Dawnguard. In front of the Inner Sanctum , there is a frozen lake with a word wall in the middle for the Drain Vitality dragon shout , which is guarded by the twin dragons Naaslaarum and Voslaarum. There are several other areas that can only be reached from within the vale. These areas can be accessed either directly or via the paragon platform , and include: Darkfall Grotto , Forgotten Vale Cave , Forgotten Vale Forest , Forgotten Vale Overlook , the Glacial Crevice , the Inner Sanctum holding Auriel's Chapel which is displayed as "Temple Balcony" at the wayshrine portals, once the final wayshrine found there is raised at the end of the related quest , and Sharpslope Cave.

The other side, to the northeast, is a snowy forest environment dotted with exotic flora and fauna. Throughout the Vale there are many "hidden" treasures and other not so obvious points of interest, so it is recommended to search throughout the place carefully for maximum loot and satisfaction. It is also rich in several types of ore, including silver , gold , quicksilver , moonstone mostly around the frozen lake and on the mountains , orichalcum and malachite common along the sides of the river. The Forgotten Vale is a hidden region of Skyrim that is inhabited by Falmer. However, it once was a holy place to their predecessors, the Snow Elves , and houses a temple to the goddess Auri-El. It also contains a massive frozen-over lake and waterfall, where dragons are known to lurk, even underwater. It contains variants of almost any species known in Skyrim , including the otherwise unseen Frost Giants. At the north-eastern shore of the frozen lake a word wall for the shout Drain Vitality can be found. Shortly after entering the vale the Dragonborn will stumble upon a small cave, just north of the main path. In the cave a Rope Release opens up a hidden passage to the a Shellbug that can be mined for Shellbug Chitin. Further along the path the Wayshrine of Sight is located. And entering the main vale with the frozen waterfalls, to the south-east is the Wayshrine of Learning.

Continuing along the riverbank and just before reaching the bottom of the next waterfall, a gap in the ice contains an ice wraith guarding a novice-locked chest, with a lootable skeleton and a satchel beside it. The ramp on the left leads back up to the lookout point and a raised tent, which has a central campfire and a troll skull on a bench.
