An Aetherium Shard , or Glowing Crystal Shard if it is found before meeting Katria , is a piece of pure Aetherium that can be combined with others to form an Aetherium Crest. It is an essential item for the quest " Lost to the Ages. The others can be obtained from Deep Folk Crossing upper piece and Raldbthar right piece. The lower piece can be found in the Dwarven Storeroom outside Mzulft , without needing to start " Revealing the Unseen. If one is obtained before "Lost to the Ages" is started, then a miscellaneous quest, "Identify the Crystal Shard" will appear in the quest log.

Or you can simply head directly for the location Arkngthamz, which is South of Markarth in the Reach. The Reward is rather nice too and it is interesting to deal more with Dwemer lore. Doing this quest should be rather fun for you. Follow the Mountain Range towards Windhelm.
