Players familiar with the series will have a general idea of what to expect graphically from this title but this has to be the best looking Sniper Elite yet. The fine detail on screen is also pretty impressive and caused me to stop and marvel at it on several occasions. For example, after landing on a beach in a dingy rather than getting straight into my usual routine of tagging enemies with my binoculars and then killing everyone in a grey uniform, I spent a minute or so just marveling at the motion of the waves, the pebbles, the rocky cliffs and my wet clothing as the rain poured down on me. At the start of each chapter, it is possible to pull up a map of your local environment and a list of the main objectives that need to be completed before you can exfiltrate and finish the mission. As more information is discovered from sources such as locked safes and overheard enemy conversations more objectives are added to your to-do list. Multiple side missions are also available ranging from sabotaging enemy defences to tracking down and eliminating named targets. Eliminating these targets in the way specified in the mission brief unlocks special weapons to be used in-game. The level of immersion is much greater than it was in the last game, to the extent that I even discovered events taking place while exploring my surroundings that were never mentioned in my mission brief or side mission list. A meeting between Japanese officers and their Nazi counterparts was very enjoyable to disrupt killing everyone obviously but was only signposted by a few Japanese flags that I had spotted flying around the area. Some of the larger objectives can be completed in two different ways bringing a welcome level of flexibility to proceedings, there is no set order in which to fulfill any of your goals and there are even multiple exfiltration points this time around. The ability to climb in certain areas is refreshing as it makes it much easier to traverse to the perfect sniping spot or hidden weapon upgrade bench. You can choose to play in a completely stealthy manner, be an all-out killing machine, or mix and match the two playing styles.

In news that will make any Nazi with a nutsack feel nervous, the serial scrotum-sniping soldier, Karl Fairburne, is back on the hunt. Yet while welcome enhancements to controls, weapon customisation, and multiplayer features make Sniper Elite 5 by far and away the most flexible entry in the series to date, another forgettable story and some heavily recycled mission objectives made it seem more like sniper repeat than sniper elite by the time I reached the end of its hour campaign. The Sniper Elite series has always been more concerned with tracing the trajectory of its bullets than creating complex story arcs for its characters, and indeed this fifth mainline instalment is no different. Drop in a cartoonish high-ranking Nazi antagonist and a series of predictable late-game dramatic turns, and you have a WWII story more straightforward than the scope on Fairburne's carbine. Thankfully, while Sniper Elite 5's storyline might be staid, Fairburne himself has never been more nimble or as adventurous, making him more fun to control. While each stalk through a heavily guarded area inevitably starts out as a silent crouch-walk, the moment things go loud you are now capable of quickly mantling over low walls and through windows, gaining some distance with a zipline, clambering up vines and rope netting, or sliding down inclines to break the line of sight and regroup for a counterattack. While occasionally I found myself with my back to the wall and no other option than to shoot my way out, for the most part the open level design allowed me to be less of a sitting duck and something more closely resembling a sniping Spider-Man. You also have a new focus ability that allows you to spot enemies through walls in order to avoid a potential ambush, and tools like bolt cutters can cut through weakened sections of fences to create even more optional paths to an objective. While you are now able to shimmy up to sniping spots that would have previously been unreachable, the actual experience of sniping remains largely unchanged from Sniper Elite 4. You can still tag your targets with binoculars, tamper with generators to mask the sounds of your shots, and take advantage of environmental hazards like explosive barrels in order to force these fascists into a fiery finish.

Sniper Elite 5 is back to its very best. After its brilliant and brutal base game campaign, its DLC offerings to date have been a mixed bag. Its Rough Landing DLC map is a stunning throwback but lacks bang for its buck ; while its French island outing is a neat switch up of the formula that's let down by middling weapons. Operation Kraken, however — the latest mission that's part of the game's Kraken Awakes content pack — captures everything that makes Sniper Elite enjoyable. It marks the end of the Sniper Elite 5 Season Pass Two, and is a victory lap that not only celebrates the strides this mainline entry has made over its forerunners, but the momentum the esteemed series has sustained since Sniper Elite 5 DLC weapons underwhelm, but new island mission is as good as it gets.
