As the train detours from New Eden, an environmental catastrophe threatens everyone onboard.
Asha Archie Panjabi shockingly died in Snowpiercer season 3, episode 8, just as the resurrection of another character thought dead was teased. Snowpiercer was already reeling from the bombshell Mr. However, Snowpiercer encountered a corrosive and toxic volcanic cloud that could have killed everyone aboard had Asha not tragically sacrificed herself to save the Great Ark Train. Asha was introduced in Snowpiercer season 3's premiere and the fact that she survived alone in a Korean nuclear plant for years was already unbelievable. Layton inadvertently fought Asha when they met and his oxygen deprivation coupled with seeing a photo of a dragon blood tree on a calendar led to Andre believing he had seen a "vision" of New Eden. Layton brought Asha aboard Snowpiercer and she counted herself as part of his inner circle. However, Asha was clearly suffering from trauma and had difficulty adjusting to life among the passengers of Snowpiercer.

However, when things go wrong, entire species die off. Thus, a broken air scrubber means a dire life-or-death situation for Asha and Layton while the rest of the train is confined to quarters and forced to be a little bit more introspective. Problems have been building for certain characters all season, with Layton and Till Mickey Sumner developing the most serious problems in the process. Layton is living a lie, and willing to kill to protect it. Till is struggling with the weight of her past, and the weight of her prison, as she tries to rectify being a hard-nosed, violent brakeman with her current status as train detective and friendly member of the inner circle. Till and Asha both seem to have been looking for a place, and both seem to have found it by the end of the episode.
But now, I think I see it.

They decide to reroute the Snowpiercer to find Melanie, only to enter into a hazardous territory of volcanic gas. Sacrifices are made for the greater good of the Snowpiercer as the leaders try their best to avoid a calamity inside the train. Asha was a compelling study of someone suffering from extreme trauma but, unfortunately, she was quickly relegated to a background character in spite of Snowpiercer 's coup of casting an actor the caliber of Archie Panjabi. Intellectually, I see the purpose of Snowpiercer Season 3 Episode 8 in simultaneously redeeming Asha and driving home the message to Layton that his choices have consequences. Even dangling the potential return of Melanie doesn't make up for spending most of the season investing in the Last Survivor's survival only to have her backstory and demise squished into one hour. At the heart of it, it just feels like a waste -- a waste of character potential, as well as known talent.
The train handles most of the bad air outside, no problems, thanks to build-in redundancy and resistance to corrosion. Here, with them, pulling together for something more than just survival. I'm right out on that limb with you, finally feeling like I'm part of the train. That was probably my only laugh-out-loud moment this week.
