Stoneycreek campers
Ok, hands up. Who out there spent more time under canvas than a roof during their childhood? Camping with the family is a pretty special thing. Not a screen in sight, nor reception — just acres of fresh air, fun, excitement and above all else, important time to bond as a family. Being on Lake Cootharaba has its perks, with plenty of on-water activities, including kayaking, fishing or you can book a tour of the Everglades which are a sight to behold! We find Camping area 4 best for vans and camper trailers. Stoney Creek Campers have a range of on-road or off-grid campertrailers and Hybrid Caravans that make free-camping a cinch. Their Scout range of hybrids starts at an 11foot model packed with kit, all the way to a 15 foot weapon with options for bunks or just a big Queen bed. All the models have lithium batteries for days meaning a stay overnight in the pretty Booloumba Creek is a piece of cake. Just outside of the town is a Hipcamp by the name of McSweeny Haven. The property is wide and clear and sits on the edge of a creek that has a bit of gold in it! But as far as an activity for the kids is concerned, spending half an hour panning for gold with a few flecks under your belt is a great family activity if you ask us. The final stop on our roadtrip is Bunya Red Farm. Owners Mandy and Alan are caper farmers, but recently decided to open their patch of paradise up to Hipcampers, looking for an authentic South-Burnett farmstay experience. Bunya Red Farm has a family of Alpacas that guests are more than welcome to feed, same too with a heard of cows that love their hay of an afternoon.

With a tare of kg, the Stoney Creek Campers Scout is a reasonably heavy package, and that could reflect on its offroad capabilities in steep country or on soft ground — though the dual shock trailing arm suspension and solid hot dip galvanised chassis would at least provide assurance that if your tow vehicle was up to it, so was the camper. There were some exposed water lines underneath which might be prone to snagging, and the use of poly pipe to plumb around the tanks was questionable given the capacity of large stones to be able to smash shock absorbers into surrender. I was also concerned about the spare mounted at the front, protruding well above the minimalist stone guard as it would potentially be a source for rebound stone problems on rough tracks. The use of mud flaps was good, but they also looked light weight. The Scout's big selling point is comfort, with an internal ensuite that will appeal strongly to many. The swing-around stainless kitchen is another big plus, as is the air conditioner, though it would need bulk electrical storage or V access. The two Sirocco fans would help on those hot days or nights. There was extensive storage, and the memory foam mm mattress felt comfy, though at king size it is hard up against the walls which would create difficulties when making the bed. The kitchen had reasonable bench space at either end, though the cooktop requires a wind guard.

With rain clouds threatening and humidity levels approaching per cent, we found ourselves a lovely spot to set up for the day, right beside a beautiful freshwater section of the upper reaches of the Brisbane River. Nothing gets a campsite set up or packed down quite so quickly as when there are ominous clouds overhead. So, a decision was made to get the setup shots out of the way as quickly as possible before packing it all down and moving onto the action shots. The boys knew that they now had more work to do once they got back to the factory! Our chosen spot down on the river rocks was ideal, except for a decent downwards trend of the bank down towards the water. With the help of a levelling ramp and the spirit level, the lads from Stoney Creek had it sorted in no time. It was sort of like they had done it before The rear left wheel was then chocked before the handbrake applied and the AL-KO jockey wheel snapped into position. The Cruisemaster DO35 hitch was released and the jockey wheel used to level the camper from front to back. Normally, at this point, the four drop-down stabiliser legs would be lowered to provide additional stability, but it was decided these were not required today.
