There was a time in Dragon Ball when the Super Saiyan form was a legendary, even mythical transformation that made Goku seem almost godly in the power he achieved. That time has long since passed. Dragon Ball Super has brought Goku, Vegeta, and their friends into the domain of the gods more than ever before. Their power gradually surpassed Kami, the Kais, and is now even brushing up against the gods of destruction and the angels. The means of Goku's transcendence to the power of the gods were his Super Saiyan God form and Super Saiyan Blue forms, which both gave Goku a means of tapping into the divine God Ki that allowed him to fight back against universal threats like Zamasu and Golden Frieza. Super Saiyan God utilizes God Ki—a power much more potent than the ordinary ki that Goku and the others had been utilizing up until now.

While the legend of the Super Saiyan is passed freely through saiyan culture, there is a second legend that is spoken of in more hushed tones and believed with less certainty. That legend is the Super Saiyan God, a saiyan that has obtained the power of the gods and stands at the apex of saiyan evolution. In truth, it is more than a legend. By entering this state, your body becomes slim and carries an aura of the divine. Your eyes and hair turn into a brilliant scarlet, while your movements seem more purposeful and direct only to contrast with the startling flames that engulf your body in their glorious inferno. By combining the power of Super Saiyan God with the Super Saiyan transformation, a saiyan can enter an even higher stage. Wrapped in a wreathe of blue light that breaks away like a solid shell, the red form of Super Saiyan God is replaced with a transformation akin to the traditional Super Saiyan transformation with the exception of its divine blue coloration and azure, flaming aura. There are two ways to become a Super Saiyan God. You may become a Super Saiyan God through divine training or you may enter the state by gathering six saiyans with a Good Z-Soul including yourself and have five of them target you with the Super Saiyan God Ritual Maneuver detailed below. Characters can only use the Super Saiyan God Ritual Maneuver if they have gained information on the ritual. You may move to a square adjacent to the target character or another character that has targeted the target character with the Super Saiyan God Ritual Maneuver. They do not need to pass the Stress Test for the duration of this Transformation or meet the Tier of Power Requirements if they transform into Super Saiyan God through this method. After a character successfully transforms into the Super Saiyan God Transformation through this manner, they may increase their current Ki Points by an amount equal to the gathered number of Crimson Ki Points. Just as Goku's original blonde Super Super saiyan god form was an Ascended transformation that multiplied his power from his base form, Super Saiyan Blue has the same effect on the base form of Super Saiyan God. However, Goku simply transforms into a Super Saiyan Blue, making him stronger than Hit once more and completely negating his Time-Skip. This form possesses the Aura of a God.

They went back and forth like this a bit before settling on the final design, and Toriyama was insistent on the form not being too different from Goku's regular appearance, specifically not being really muscular. This ritual was originally thought to be the only way this power could be attained, but Vegeta's Super Saiyan God form made it clear that the form can be unlocked through intense training with a divine being.
