Tak, the main protagonist of the series, as depicted in Tak 2: The Staff of Dreams. Tak is the main protagonist of the Tak and the Power of Juju Series. He is a teenage boy who hails from the Pupanunu Village and is mentored by Jibolba. In the first game , Tak was very short and had brown hair styled in a bowl cut. He wore purple war paint around his eyes, a reddish-brown shell-like loincloth, a brown anklet and a small holster on his back to carry his weapons. Perhaps Tak's most iconic feature is the yellow feather on top of his head, which acts as a health meter, slowly turning a darker purple color every time he takes damage.

The game opens with Jibolba , a Shaman , summoning the player. He then tells the Pupanunu People's Prophecy , as it has come true. In his rage, as long he and his minions, Pins and Needles 2 voodoo dolls, snuck into the Moon Temple and stole the sacred Moonstones to weaken the power of the Moon Juju who protected the village. Tlaloc then used the power of the moonstones to turn the defenseless villagers into Sheep. Jibolba could only save a few, including his apprentice Tak. After telling the player about the prophecy, Jibolba asks Tak to fetch the great warrior Lok for him, only to discover that Lok was among those who were turned into sheep.

The gameplay mostly consists of platforming obstacles and puzzles. Tak's abilities are jumping, attacking, and a unique feature, the ability to interact with and get past obstacles with the help of animals. When the player receives the Spirit Rattle, they gain access to the use of "Juju Powers" which are acquired by collecting tokens scattered around the environment. To restore Tak's health and mana , the player must collect feathers, which are much more common in the environment than Juju Power tokens. The game heavily features collecting various other items. An ancient prophecy foretells that the Moon Juju, the kind protector of the Pupanunu people, would be weakened by the evil Tlaloc, an embittered Pupanunu shaman , so he could turn the Pupanunu people into sheep as revenge for not being made high shaman in favor of another shaman, Jibolba. The prophecy also mentions a great and mighty warrior trained by the high shaman who would restore the Moon Juju, defeat Tlaloc, and bring peace to the Pupanunu people. Having escaped Tlaloc's spell, Jibolba believes his apprentice Lok to be the warrior of the prophecy and prepares to send him off; however, it appears that Lok has been turned into a sheep.
