Cinema is subjective, they say and the statement holds true for Imtiaz Ali's Tamasha. The film, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in the lead, released in and received mixed reviews. On the surface, Tamasha is a love story, told in a non-linear narrative where a woman helps a man discover who he truly is. While some termed it as a mediocre 'boy meets girl' story, others were able delve deeper into the world of Ved Ranbir Kapoor and Tara Deepika Padukone , finding it a beautiful story that goes beyond just romance. Tamasha is more about how we often let ourselves be defined by the society and jump into the race of making ends meet, thinking that is what life is about. Vaid meets Tara in Corsica and the two instantly decide that whatever they tell each other about themselves would be a lie. The duo cheerfully exclaims 'What happens in Corsica, stays in Corsica', which honestly could make the viewers roll their eyes. After all, we have had many films in which two strangers meet, decided they will forget each other after some time, but then very predictably fall in love. Hence, when we saw former couple Ranbir and Deepika singing and dancing on the streets, we knew they would end up together. But despite the predictability, the film is infused with beautifully complex emotions that come out from time to time and make it stand out compared to the other cliched strangers-meet-abroad-and-fall-in-love films. It takes time to be a part of the Tamasha world since we just see two strangers in the first few minutes, with no clue why they are doing what they are doing. Tamasha, thus, requires patience to understand. But when the film moves forward, the characters, as well as the setting, begin to grow on you. The concept of 'telling lies' goes deeper than just in the introductory scenes as we soon find that Ved is actually living a lie in the form of choosing a career that he doesn't enjoy, and needs Tara's help in coming out of it. Tara is shown as an independent, balanced woman who remains calm even after losing her luggage in a foreign country.

Throughout Tamasha, there is a recurrent line - that it is always the same story of boy meets girl and society creates a rift between them. Is Tamasha any different? It is not. What is more disappointing is the fact that the director does not build his characters enough for the audience to empathise - almost half the film is dedicated to the scenic beauty of Corsica and harps more on the sizzling chemistry of Ranbir-Deepika rather than bringing the audience any closer to the characters.
