Tara Iti Golf Club is magic! No disrespect to the home of golf, but this course might be as special as it gets when it comes to playing links golf.
Doing things a bit differently for this review since Tara Iti is too dope for WordPress. This post accompanies the photo essay and delves into the backstory of the course, translates the ethos of the club and describes the experience beyond the course in detail. I had to use the satellite view to drop a pin on what I believed to be the clubhouse, then followed the blue dot as it moved. Finally, a small sign points toward the clubhouse and to the course beyond. Tara Iti is an intimate private club that is possible for you to play! More on this later. After inquiring through the website about the possibility of taking a look at the course that debuted with a top 50 world ranking, I was lucky enough to receive an invite to stay, play, and get the full experience and pay, for the haters out there.

An exclusive private golf club north of Auckland, Tara Iti was designed by Tom Doak and set alongside a spotless surf beach near the small town of Mangawhai. The project was developed by Californian financier Ric Kayne, and took several years to complete due to complicated planning and regulatory challenges. The delays may have been unwelcome at the time, but they were necessary and his course was certainly worth the wait. What makes Tara Iti so special, is the pristine dunes upon which most of the holes are set and the constant views out toward Bream Bay and the iconic Great Barrier, and Hen and Chicken islands. Interestingly, when Doak first set foot on the property the coastline was completely hidden by a dense and overgrown pine plantation, that had not only robbed the site of any biodiversity it had, in fact, provided shelter for predators of the rare birds. From both the golf course and the elevated clubhouse we get to enjoy some of the most glorious coastal outlooks in New Zealand. Throughout the round, the overwhelming sense at Tara Iti is of playing a course with a distinct character and personality. Beyond the sand, the sea views and expansive landing areas, the other feature of this course are its greens. A number are either totally or partly set within dune hollows, while many others are built with severe internal contours or steep pitches. From the very first hole you are on alert, that any shot played with the wrong club or to the wrong section of green will leave you an awkward, if not impossible, recovery. Although the back nine is very strong, the front is unquestionably the premier side and home to the best couple of holes on the course. The first gem is the par four 3 rd , its dell green wedged in a deep depression between a pair of opposing dunes. Feeding your ball off the higher right shoulder and down toward sunken pins is a genuine pleasure and, crucially, within the capabilities of most golfers. The other obvious standout is the drivable 7 th , set obliquely between ridges and with the smallest, and nastiest, green that Doak has ever built. Other quality holes on the front side include the par five 5 th , the angled and wildly contoured par four 6 th and the two-shot 8 th.

Rankings: 2nd 5th 16th. The driveable par fours highlight the course and the ocean views throughout the round never grow tired. Directions: Get here! Located an hour and a half north of Auckland on a stretch of beach that was exposed after a massive clearing of trees and non-native plants, the property for Tara Iti was a blank canvas for Tom Doak to work with which created a scenario that could only be limited by his imagination. The beautiful setting, which now features some native planting, rests alongside the ocean but is located meters inland due to development restrictions. While those holes are played with great anticipation, the lengthy and controversial par four 12th if often played with a significant dose of dread with its blind tee shot and a green that is tilts harder to the left than Bernie Sanders. That is great from the aspect that the holes are consistently so good from start to finish, but it also lacks the type of climax that you get from so many of the best coastal courses in the world; at Cypress Point, at Pebble Beach, at Cabot Cliffs, and at Turnberry come to mind.

Most folks I spoke to on the property noted that the South Course has a couple more breathtaking views and elevation changes than its counterpart North, but the North Course provides a wider array of shot-making options for the more serious golfer. That is not a links course. The creek comes into play on many of the closing holes, including a gorgeously long par three thirteenth hole, and an 18th-hole par five that will hopefully provide some incredible major finishes. LOL, alpacas and mini-ponies!? It would appear that the majority of members and visitors arrive to the course by chopper from Auckland, and the sound of helicopters taking off and landing would litter the air throughout my 24 hours on site. Add your review My rating. But there is also incredible passion around the game here in Texas. The layout has some elevation changes so it may not be the easiest to walk. Our last visit to Scottsdale brought my family to the Fairmont Princess during the Christmas season. The fairways and rough use the same grass type to allow for flexible widening and narrowing of hole corridors to adjust for championship play. Old Town is only one little pocket of what Scottsdale has to offer, but because of the neat stores for our kiddo and walkability, we spent most of our time away from the resort here. There are opportunities to tuck pins and lengthen the East course to 7, yards. Palo Verde dining room at Boulders.
Since its grand reveal, Tara Iti Golf Club has occupied a place in the hearts and minds of golfers across the world.
Your email address. I am not really sure how else to describe it. Tara Iti looks incredible. Troon North offers a membership plan as well as public play, and daily fees are dynamicly priced. Published 2 years ago on Feb 2, A large tree sits high on the left side of the hole and stands as a mark to be sure to stay right of as its roots grow in the waste area left of the short grass. Published 3 months ago on Dec 22, As long as you don't go wide left with your tee shot you should end up with a great opportunity to get aggressive and get under par on this hole. The creek comes into play on many of the closing holes, including a gorgeously long par three thirteenth hole, and an 18th-hole par five that will hopefully provide some incredible major finishes. The par threes are scenic but lengthy as well, generally playing around yards from the backs except for the short yard 16th.
