I was thinking of emailing some Valve people, but first I want to throw the idea out there for discussion, feedback, proofreading, and possible signatures from people that support it. I believe Valve's focus in combating the issue should be on the bot accounts themselves and their creator s , however patches that have been made to the game thus far address only their abilities. I understand that legal action against their creator s is not necessarily feasible or worth the investment. Probably the biggest issue with removing bots is distinguishing between a normal user's account and that of a bot. I do not know what methods of identifying these accounts are in use currently, but I assume it is a difficult task to fully automate. I suggest abandoning the idea of automation for now, and instead outsourcing the task to the player base. As your employees cannot be omnipresent, grant those who are the players the ability to resolve the issue.

On an average day, the IGN news tips line sees a slow but steady stream of messages from folks who want to let us know about something we might report on. Maybe a handful of tips a day. But this past weekend, the line was flooded in just a few hours with over a hundred messages from a group of very frustrated folk: the Team Fortress 2 community. Why were so many of them in our inbox? The source of the flood is a community centered around Team Fortress 2 content creator SquimJim, who published a video on May 7 lamenting the rampant botting issues within Team Fortress 2. In it, he encourages his audience to reach out to both media and Valve employees in hopes that enough pressure will force the developer to take action. SquimJim offered an email template which many of our tippers used, though others wrote their own messages and a list of both media tiplines like our own, and publicly-available Valve employee emails. At the time this piece was written, the video had almost , views, 15, likes, and nearly 2, comments chiming in about their own frustrating experiences with bots. Incidentally, this was around the same time that the Team Fortress 2 source code was leaked. Other theories about why the botting crisis has kicked off include a bizarre revenge plotline. As Valve seemed less and less interested in pushing major updates to the game, some believe that botters rallied to try and make Team Fortress 2 so unplayable that Valve would be forced to pay attention to it again, or to drive new players to community servers. Some also suspect that bots are trying to acquire cosmetic items through play that they can then sell for real money on various marketplaces.

And Valve does seem to at least be aware that bots in Team Fortress 2 are an issue.

Nine months ago, Team Fortress 2 was overrun with racist, homophobic, sexist and transphobic bots. They were active in nearly every match, using cheats to secure headshots while spewing hate speech in the chat. Players documented the behavior and shared their frustration with Valve, the developer behind TF2 , but the problem lingered for months. Once news of the bot invasion hit media outlets , Valve finally rolled out an update aimed at curbing their activity. The June update fixed a cosmetic bug that the bots had been exploiting and it removed the ability for free accounts to text chat. Previously, you could only have one vote going at a time. Now, multiple kick votes, both team-specific and global, can be in process at the same time. Valve also fixed an exploit that let players or bots change their in-game name during a match, which was sometimes used by bots to make it harder to detect who was real and who was a dirty, loathsome AI. In theory, these changes should allow human players to more quickly and efficiently remove bots, which has Redditors and the like celebrating. However, they could theoretically lead to bot-filled servers being able to kick human players even faster, too.
