They look back on the film and its legacy, over 20 years since its original release. Three mysterious new servants arrive and it becomes chillingly clear that there is far more to this house than can be seen, and Grace finds herself in a terrifying fight to save her children and preserve her sanity. I remember back in going to see The Others at the cinema and one thing that I picked up on was the sound which made the hairs on the back of my neck stand to attention with subtle creepy sounds and the sounds of children running around on the rear speakers. The 4K restoration is no expectation when it comes to the sound and this release even comes with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack that has so much clarity and bass that you really get the feeling that you are in the house that has a mystery twist that hits you hard. If you love a release with plenty of features then the 4K restoration of The Others has some nice features that will take you more into the behind-the-scenes and more of the film. Nicole Kidman stars as a World War II—era mother whose imperiousness masks a terrifying pain, as she keeps her light-sensitive children enshrouded in darkness on her country estate. The arrival of three new servants punctures her insular world—and seems to disturb the balance between the living and the dead. That mix of techniques could play into how these sequences appear here because there are instances where the fog is rendered naturally, blending cleanly to expose the many layers. Then, there are other instances where the fog can appear a bit buzzy, if not terribly so. Grain is rendered well enough outside those foggy moments, retaining a natural look through much of the film. Artifacts are rarely an issue, but banding is evident during the opening credits, which may have been digitally created. Though I think it would have benefitted the film, the SDR presentation is ultimately okay, handling the dark photography impressively, even when it comes to the shadows. Black levels are still profound, and the range is wide enough to reveal details and highlights in the shadows. Light from the gas lamps also blends nicely into the dark, with clean gradations.

The film is set in , but intentionally feels more like a classic turn of the century ghost story. Nicole Kidman is Grace, the tightly wound, pious mother of two young photosensitive children, who must be kept in perpetual darkness. From the mist-shrouded gothic mansion, full of shadows, candlelight, and creaking floors, to the pale-faced children, enigmatic serving staff, and things going bump in the night. Haunted by loneliness, and consumed with the obsessive upkeep of the household in order to keep her children safe, her performance as Grace is utterly captivating, and carries the film with her commanding presence. Elsewhere in the cast, Fionnula Flanagan, Eric Sykes, and Elaine Cassidy are excellent as the household staff, shuffling around in the darkness, and evidently more aware of what is going on than poor Grace. The two child actors, Alakina Mann and James Bentley skirt perilously close to annoying, but it works tremendously for the film, and adds another layer of stress and anxiety for Grace to endure. Brilliantly remastered, this is well worth the upgrade. This release comes with two brand new special features. The rest of the special features have been ported over from previous versions, and include a minute making of programme from , a short piece on the visual effects, a clip about the disease the children suffer from, some behind the scenes footage of the director at work, a selection of stills, and the theatrical trailer.

A remote manor; hushed, candlelit atmosphere; and shivery, supernatural menace. The arrival of three new servants punctures her insular world—and seems to disturb the balance between the living and the dead. However, the histrionics and crazed plotting take a backseat in The Others , as it opts for a much more languid pace free of overly convoluted thriller plotting. The conceit of The Others is rather simple: Nicole Kidman lords over a capacious estate with secrets to hide. This thriller deals in atmosphere and trusts that its story is only deepened by its beautifully rendered setting. Her two photosensitive children, Anne Alakina Mann and Nicholas James Bentley , start to see a young boy named Victor, his parents, and an elderly blind woman at random times in the house. Grace dismisses the happenings as outright falsehoods until the new servants make Grace privy to the dark history of the house. You look at something like M.
