Dota 2 developer Valve Software stirred controversy on Tuesday 16 August when they revealed the list of 12 teams that received coveted direct invites to The International 11 TI11the game's marquee million-dollar world championship tournament.

The International is still months away but this early, four teams can breathe easy as they are pretty much guaranteed a direct invite. Today, we'll take a look at how these four teams managed to do just that. Let's start with the Chinese powerhouse PSG. They finished on top at the end of Tour 1 and won the Regional Finals. LGD also finished 1st after Tour 2. While they qualified to be part of the Stockholm Major, some health issues in China prevented them, along with other Chinese teams from attending. The International was the concluding tournament of the season of Dota Pro Circuit and the eleventh annual edition of The International , which returned to Asia for the second time. The invite format was similar to the one used for the preceding International, whereby a point system based on official sponsored Regional Leagues and Majors was be used to determine the teams invited to The International. It was announced that the second and third place teams from each region's qualifiers will compete in a Last Chance Qualifier prior to The International to determine two additional qualification spots - thus expanding the amount of teams in the group stage from 18 to 20 teams. The International was the first occasion where the main event was played out on two different venues: the Playoffs until top 4 at SunTec Singapore followed by the Finals remaining top 4 at Singapore Indoor Stadium.
