Have you ever planted a Tall Fescue lawn from seed and stumbled upon an uninvited guest that looks like Tall Fescue, but somehow seems out of place? If so, you might be looking at Poa trivialis weeds, aka rough bluegrass, roughstalk bluegrass, or known by landscapers as "Poa triv" for short. Yes, this invader is related to Poa annua , aka annual poa grass or annual bluegrass. However, Poa trivialis is a taller-growing, perennial weed that will come back year after year in cool climates, even after it dies back in the summer heat, and it requires different weed control methods. Roughstalk bluegrass is renowned as a common stowaway in non -Blue Tag Certified Tall Fescue seed and stands out as an eyesore in an otherwise pristine Tall Fescue lawn. It's hugely distracting and frustrates even the chillest of gardeners. For this reason, we recommend purchasing only Blue Tag Certified Tall Fescue seed, such as our Elite Tall Fescue seed , because it is certified to be free of weed seeds.

It spreads rapidly using lateral creeping stems called stolons which can smother desirable turfgrasses. Like creeping bentgrass, this growth habit is incompatible when mixed with upright turfgrass species like perennial ryegrass or turf-type tall fescue. In home-lawns it forms puffy patches of turf that are prone to mower scalping. Additionally, it is prone to infection by numerous turfgrass diseases like dollar spot and brown patch. This grass has become a serious problem weed over the last 15 years especially in Kentucky bluegrass and turf-type tall fescue. In home-lawns the dense irregular, circular patches may range from 6 inches to several feet in diameter and disrupt uniformity. It grows very well in moderate shade and prefers moist soils. It will tolerate full sun but will turn off color during summer heat stress. It is frequently found in shady areas near gutter downspouts where the soil is moist and the environment is shady and conducive for healthy growth. This grass is one of the first grasses to green-up in the spring and may be the reason for mowing in the early part of the growing season. It most commonly invades lawns via contaminated seed lots but may also move throughout the landscape via the transfer of stolons by mowing equipment. Maintain proper cultural practices for the species being maintained and mow at the highest possible height for that species. Infrequent irrigation may help the competitive edge of desirable lawn turfgrass species since rough bluegrass is not as deep rooted as other species like turf-type tall fescue.

Patches of this grass often resemble areas where petroleum products may have been initially spilled.
Weed grasses are among the most difficult weeds to treat and control in lawns. The difficulty arises in the fact that many herbicides that will kill these weed grasses will kill lawn grass as well. This means that a combination of weed control methods must be used and maintained over an extended period of time for continued control. There is no quick and easy fix for weed grass problems, particularly when those weed grasses are the undesirable bluegrasses. Both types of bluegrass are widespread enough to consider them naturalized and they are more than likely already in your lawn.
