I'm really happy that Gorhill has listened ublock origin lite feedback on the branding and explanation of this, and added back in the ability to "opt in" to extended permissions on individual sites. Thank you for your work, and I'm sorry if my comments in the preview HN thread came off as overly hostile, because given the original comments you made about MV3, I couldn't imagine this sort of outcome.

The uBlock Origin is a free and open-source, cross-platform browser extension for content filtering—primarily aimed at neutralizing privacy invasion in an efficient, user-friendly method. Open source ad blockers are a potentially effective technology for energy conservation. The initial uBlock was developed by Raymond Hill in order to enable community-maintained block lists while simultaneously adding additional features and upgrading the code quality to proper release standards. First released in June as an exclusive Chrome and Opera extension, in late the initial uBlock extension expanded to other browsers under its current name — uBlock Origin. Quickly gaining traction throughout the entire ad-blocking industry, the uBlock Origin Firefox version collected over 5 million active users, with its Chrome extension subsequently compiling over 10 million active users. A permission-less content blocker. Blocks ads, trackers, miners, and more immediately upon installation. To grant extended permissions on a given site, open the popup panel and pick a higher filtering mode such as Optimal or Complete. The browser will then warn you about the effects of granting the additional permissions requested by the extension on the current site, and you will have to tell the browser whether you accept or decline the request. If you accept uBOL's request for additional permissions on the current site, it will be able to better filter content for the current site. You can set the default filtering mode from uBOL's options page. If you pick the Optimal or Complete mode as the default one, you will need to grant uBOL the permission to read and modify data on all websites. Keep in mind this is still a work in progress, with these end goals: - No broad host permissions at install time -- extended permissions are granted explicitly by the user on a per-site basis. What's also said is that for some features in the future there's further investigation required. HN is barely better.

So I was actually trying out uBlock Origin Lite [1] the MV3 compatible version as my daily driver for the past week and I must say it's not that bad. I really wouldn't want to opt into every single site I visit. Most websites don't bother with antiadblock because current adblock can handle that. Once most people are using crippled ad blockers that can't bypass antiadblock, they'll implement the antiadblock. There isn't much incentive right now to make ad delivery that can't be blocked in mv3. I'd bet once mv2 is gone you will suddenly start seeing ads not blocked because it's impossible to block with declarative rules. MBCook on Sept 29, parent next [—].

Upon installation, uBOL immediately blocks ads, trackers, miners, and more without requiring any additional permissions. If desired, users can add more rulesets by visiting the options page accessible through the popup panel. Unlike other content blockers, uBOL is entirely declarative and does not require a permanent process for filtering. The content filtering is performed reliably by the browser itself, eliminating the need for uBOL to consume CPU and memory resources. The service worker process of uBOL is only required when interacting with the popup panel or the option pages. While uBOL has limited capabilities compared to uBlock Origin, it allows users to explicitly grant extended permissions on specific sites for better filtering using cosmetic filtering and scriptlet injections. By opening the popup panel and selecting a higher filtering mode, users can grant additional permissions on a per-site basis. Please note that uBlock Origin Lite is still a work in progress with the goal of providing a content blocking solution without requiring broad host permissions at install time. Its declarative approach ensures reliability and efficiency in CPU and memory usage. Have you tried uBlock Origin Lite?

If ever you really do want to contribute something, think about the people working hard to maintain the filter lists you are using, which were made available to use by all for free. If you make a big Reddit donation to someone, you're actually donating to Conde Nast, Spez, etc. If you pick the Optimal or Complete mode as the default one, you will need to grant uBOL the permission to read and modify data on all websites. Once most people are using crippled ad blockers that can't bypass antiadblock, they'll implement the antiadblock. Though it does its best to deal with the technical challenges which comes with MV3, the end result is poor efficiency- and reliability-wise compared to its MV2 counterpart. Quote reply. Discussion options. I agree, uBlock Origin Minus was a better name. Why does MV3 matter? You might also like… True AdBlocker - free adblocker 4. Those kind of people deserve what they do to others. Also, we have not yet finalized how this new permission will interact with other permission grants, but extensions that currently have the webRequest permission and broad host permissions will likely not require an additional grant for this permission. Hailing from its larger brother, uBlock Origin Lite offers a simplified, yet just as capable ad-blocking solution, whose take on the entire process is both accessible, as well as a breeze to set up and forget. Gorhill should have a statue somewhere for making the web browseable. You are here to tell us when posed with the question "do you want to block trackers who do nothing but slow down your browsing" users would go "no thank you, only the ads"? Many here will look silly overnight when that happens. A permission-less content blocker. No support for procedural, style, scriptlet, or redirect tho.
