Studying Honours offers a chance to develop your research and professional skills guided by staff who are passionate about research and the development of new researchers. An Honours year provides the satisfaction of advanced study, a close supervision relationship with an academic, the ability to engage in specialised and extended research, and enhanced job opportunities. It is also a pathway to a postgraduate research degree such as a Masters by Research or PhD. Study at Honours level represents the highest level of training in an undergraduate degree within the Australian tertiary education system. Honours is an extra year of study, usually following immediately on from a pass degree, that combines aspects of undergraduate study with those of postgraduate research. It introduces advanced research training through the completion of a thesis or a creative or practice-based research project.

The Bachelor of Science Honours degree allows high-performing students to deepen their knowledge of approaches, perspectives and traditions in their chosen scientific discipline and undertake a significant research project. There are 29 specialisations available covering a wide and diverse range of disciplines, from biology, chemistry and physics to aviation, geology and statistics. As a result of the variety of options that can be chosen across the Faculty, the proportion of research-based work and coursework will differ by School. This degree also provides an academic foundation for you to continue on to a masters by research or a PhD. Our world-class laboratories, clinics and simulators give you the tools to explore new frontiers and make meaningful scientific discoveries to benefit society. We offer a range of adjustment factor schemes that reward students for academic performance and extra-curricular achievements. Elite Athletes, Performers and Leaders EAPL This program recognises achievements in the areas of sport, academia, leadership and music at an elite level. You may be eligible for up to five points. Educational Access Scheme EAS Factors such as illness, financial hardship, language difficulties or attending a particular school can mean you don't always get the best possible marks in Years 11 and Eligible students can receive between 1 and 10 points towards their chosen UNSW degree.

If you undertake a Bachelors degree in Australia, you typically have the opportunity to complete either a Pass degree or an Honours degree. An Honours degree is available only to students who have attained a specified level of academic achievement in a particular program of study, involves both coursework and advanced research training, and usually has an extra year of university study devoted to it. Undertaking an Honours year will allow you to get your first real glimpse of what being an academic involves.
