It has been working smoothly since then and the release of OpenMediaVault 6. Usefully, upgrade omv 5 to 6, I enabled an SSH service for remote logins and set up an account for anything that I needed to do. This includes upgrades, taking backups of what is on my NAS drives and even shutting down the machine when I am done with what I need to do with it. Using an SSH session, the first step was to switch to the administrator account and issue the following command to ensure that my OpenMediaVault 5.

However, openmediavault-resetperms is not available in OMV6. It is ported - omv-extras plugins - porting progress to OMV 6. Check if installed plugin is available in OMV6. Looks fine to me. I ran "omv-release-upgrade" from a remote SSH login, rebooted after completion, a few moments ago and it seemed to work fine. Beware, I'm a newbie with OMV and stumbled across those instructions. Use at your own risk. Before doing the omv-release-upgrade update you system to the latest using the update function in the GUI. Then it is best to run omv-release-upgrade in a screen session in case you loose connection to the server via ssh.

You can of course do a new fresh install of OMV6 to test it , and check the plugin existence, if a plugin that you use on OMV 5 is not ported to OMV 6 , future upgrade fails, unless you first deinstall orphan plugin. If you do this way, use a new boot device for test so you can always use your actual OMV 5 boot device to continue working.

With that complete, it was time to reboot the system and I fired up the web administration interface and spotted a kernel update that I applied.
