Traditionally associated with black mana, Vampires are one of the most popular creature types in Magic: The Gathering.

Vampires are, by a wide margin, my favorite creature type. While the creature type has existed since Magic began, with one of the "original" bomb creatures being Sengir Vampire , they have only relatively recently if original Zendikar can be called that gotten full support, but they've been making up for it ever since. Vampires specialize in playing solid creatures on-curve, playing out sticky threats, draining life totals, and generally making a nuisance of themselves in large numbers. While they have seen some success in various Standard formats my own favorite Standard deck was Zendikar-era Vampires , Commander is where you'll find the vampiric bloodlines thriving, and I'm more than happy to help walk you through building a deck for my favorite creatures. The first step when it comes to building a Commander deck should almost always be choosing your commander itself. While you can build around several of the cards in the 99, you're always going to have access to your commander, so it gives you the overall best starting point. Vampires are not at all lacking when it comes to good commanders, but there are a few clear winners that I'll take a moment to talk about. I recommend picking from the following top ten vamps:. Edgar Markov is the most powerful option for Vampires and my personal recommendation—the power of generating bodies for free is impossible to argue with, and he nearly pushes out all other options. Evelyn, the Covetous gives you a more unique payoff and comes up as a close second, as card advantage in the command zone is spectacular. Vito is a wicked win condition in the command zone and one of the reasons to strongly consider a mono-black build. Strefan and Anje both ask that you build around the blood token subtheme, giving you value for leaning into this unique aspect of vampires. Edgar, Charmed Groom and Elenda, the Dusk Rose both support a token-based Vampire strategy, while Anowon can make life miserable for your opponent's creature-based decks. Finally, a note on the Honorable Mentions that are the entire Olivia package. I love Olivia all three of them , but she doesn't necessarily play all that well as a Vampire commander.
This sparks interesting gameplay and choices.
What if there were a creature that could prey on… us? Vampires as a creature type have deep roots in the game. There are plenty of vampire commanders that work as tribal lords to build a vampire- theme deck , but the creature type has so much more to offer in the commander zone than just tribal decks. Grab a bundle of garlic and the nearest wooden stake, let's take a look at the best vampiric leaders! Vampire commanders are primarily focused associated with black and red as the primary colors of the tribe , though several multicolor commanders branch out into blue and green. Some of these are just good cards, but a lot of them have interesting angles that ask you to make more complex deckbuilding choices than just picking good cards in your colors.

Elenda, the Dusk Rose might be the best aristocrat commander on the list. This works as the commander of a token-focused strategy and can even work with some lifegain synergies since the tokens it creates have lifelink. First and foremost, when this seven-mana Vampire Demon enters the battlefield, you may immediately have the target opponent discard half of the cards in their hand, rounded down, removing several potential answers they may have to your game plan. Vampires, even more than many other creature builds, tend to rely on playing "on curve. Stensia Banquet.
