The movie is a prequel to the Van Wilder franchise, which has gained a cult following over the years. It tells the story of Van Wilder's early days as a college student at Coolidge College. The movie revolves around Van Wilder's attempts to party his way through college, while also trying to win the heart of his crush, Kaitlyn Kristin Cavallari. Along the way, he faces a number of obstacles, including a disciplinary committee, a rival frat house, and a dean who wants to see him fail. One of the central themes of the movie is the clash between Van Wilder's laid-back attitude and the stricter, more conservative values of the college administration. This is particularly evident in his various run-ins with the dean of the college, played by Kurt Fuller. Van initially struggles to fit in with the other students and has a difficult time making friends, but eventually finds a place with his roommate, Farley Steve Talley , and a group of misfits who form their own fraternity. The group is committed to partying and having a good time, but also comes together to support each other during tough times. Throughout the movie, there are several memorable party scenes and comedic moments, many of which involve Van and his wild antics.

In the process, Van clashes with the college's military cadet leader, Dirk, who disapproves of Van's partying ways.

This movie relies on cheap laughs, which are brought about mostly by humor well below the belt. To his dismay, all the girls have taken a vow of chastity and the dean rules the school.
