But, even if they weren't directly involved on Coruscant, teaching Anakin how to use the Force and practicing with him the techniques of lightsaber dueling, certain characters still played a role in his eventual rise in the Republic as a Jedi General and beyond. One character who might actually wish they hadn't provided Anakin with a path to fulfilling his destiny as a Jedi was the junk dealer Toydarian, Watto. In Star Wars , Watto lived on Tatooine, and was the last owner of Anakin and his mother, Shmi, before they were both eventually freed from being slaves at his parts shop in Mos Espa. Watto had only two major appearances in the Star Wars storyline: one in The Phantom Menace , and another briefly in Attack of the Clones. Nonetheless, if it weren't for Watto's gambling problem and greed, Anakin would be stuck on Tatooine for his childhood, and who knows how his story would have gone.

Watto star wars

The "Star Wars" universe has countless interesting and well-developed characters, ranging from those we've seen throughout the movies — like Obi-Wan Kenobi — to those introduced and explored through animation — like Ahsoka Tano. Then, there's Watto, the Mos Espa-based junk dealer who once owned Anakin Skywalker and his mother, Shmi, and is confidently one of the worst "Star Wars" characters. Whatever happened to the grumpy Toydarian? Interestingly enough, Watto's fate created a bit of a plot hole in the old "Star Wars" canon. However, when he travels to Mos Espa, he beheads an elderly Toydarian junk dealer, presumably Watto, after acquiring information on Kenobi. It's unclear exactly what year "Old Wounds" takes place, but it's definitely before the Battle of Yavin, where Luke Skywalker destroyed the first Death Star. While both stories are no longer canon, "Star Wars" had a massive Watto-sized plot hole that never received a proper explanation. Although plot holes are never ideal for an ever-growing universe like "Star Wars," Watto's fate bringing one to a galaxy far, far away offers much more than his new canonical ending.

Searching Mos Espa, he finds Watto sitting outside the shop at a small stall. Lars later returned to the shop again, this time hoping to trade ownership of Shmi for a landspeeder. Also in Watto's arsenal were several loaded chance cubes , which he would use to swindle others in games of chance. Don't have an account? The Jedi used one of his mind tricks to dismiss Sebulba, and then demanded that the Toydarian retrieve and deactivate the transmitter that would allow Anakin to leave Tatooine. The young Human protested, insisting that he had already done so that day, but the Toydarian cared little, ordering him to do as he was told.
