Warning: This post contains spoilers for all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. These magical objects may seem like MacGuffins, or simply plot devices that are meant to keep the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward. But in fact, these objects are Infinity Stones: a group of gems that grant what are the infinity gems owner great power.

Initially known as the Soul Gems, and also known as the Reality Gems, the Infinity Gems are among the most powerful artifacts in existence. The unassuming gems are oblong in shape and smooth in texture. They are about 4 to 5 inches in length. The power in these gems are subtle in their influence, and if an owner is unaware of the vast potential of a gem they could very well never realize it. Each gem gives the bearer complete power and mastery over it's aspect of the universe which are Power, Reality, Space, Time, Mind, and Soul. Together the gems give whomever can combine their control over all aspects, making the wielder immensely powerful to the point of omnipotence.

He later used the stones' power to reduce them to atoms, as to prevent his work from being undone and to keep himself or anyone else from abusing their power. Five years later , the Avengers traveled back in time to retrieve the stones from alternate timelines in order to resurrect the victims of the Snap. After the Battle of Earth , Captain America returned the stones to their respective timelines. Before the universe began, six singularities existed. The Big Bang then formed concentrated crystals out of them and sent the six stones hurtling throughout the universe.

Five years laterthe Avengers traveled back in time to retrieve the stones from alternate timelines in order to resurrect the victims of the Snap.

Thanos was the first to use the six Soul Gems in unison. He intended to destroy the universe by using the Soul gems to destroy the stars. The Elders of the Universe were the second entities to use the gems in unison. Connecting the six Soul Gems to a device, they were able to use its beams to absorb the life energy of Galactus and transfer it to a barren planet, giving it life. However, the Silver Surfer interfered and destroyed the machine, and the gems were lost in a black hole.
