Generally scalloped braces are more responsive and provide more bass, yamaha fg720s, where as non scalloped are yamaha fg720s a little stiffer and brighter sounding. I would lean toward the as well - you will not be disappointed. I'd go for the newer model.

That is why I think the FGS is as great for beginners as for more well-seasoned players or anyone in between. This 12 string acoustic dreadnought has solid sitka spruce top, a great quality material for great sound and tone. The back and sides are made of nato which might not be the most beloved and revered material for the guitar, serves its purpose very well and is really durable. The neck is also Nato and providing great bass. The action is great, low enough to ease strumming. The comfort, which is such a vital factor for beginners, is provided by a narrower shoulders and the wider bout provides the projection you will need. Yamaha has equipped this baby with rosewood fingerboard and bridge, die-cast tuners, and tortoise pickguard.

I can find no other differences in the guitar specifications. Perhaps this was a mid-life crisis purchase, or just an excuse to buy new toys, but I purchased the Yamaha FGS guitar to learn on. I quickly realised that in order for me to practise, the instrument needed to be accessible. I needed to be able to pick it up, play for 15 or 20 minutes, and then move on to the next family job.
