Zainab Johnson is an American comedian and actress. Johnson is a series regular on Amazon's Upload. Johnson was born and raised in Harlem , New York, one of thirteen children of a devout Muslim family. Johnson later moved to Los Angeles to become an actress. She was named to Variety ' s 10 Comics to Watch for Johnson co-hosts the Netflix series Humans.

The comedian, writer, and actor is known for telling stories about dating, being a Black Muslim in America, and her enormous family 12 siblings, where most people can barely cope with just one. Like so many aspiring comics, Zainab began her career doing open mics several nights a week, which she covers in this special. In walks Zainab, to a loudly cheering, quite intimate crowd, with a bold, beautiful outfit and a big smile. The location is a striking one for a comedy special, what looks like an underground vault, like the ones at Waterloo. Her set is in the round, where she has to actively move and engage with the audience which makes a dramatic change from the classic theatre stage. After moving to Los Angeles from New York to act, she struggled to get a job. While shopping on Net-a-Porter one day, she got a call from a friend who produced comedy shows. The person needed someone to fill in for their assistant who was just fired. Those two days turned into six months and she found herself always in the company of comedians at comedy clubs.
