Bittorrent is not exactly a file sharing program. You use it by downloading. The torrent client you're using will then proceed to download the file from everybody else with that same. The beauty of bittorrent is that people can download the file from you before you've even finished downloading it yourself. Because of this, the more people who download the file, the faster everyone actually gets it done, unlike normal downloading. Once you've finished downloading, it's courteous to leave your client running so that others may download from you.
