By Holly Nolan. We are coming together with a prayer of peace for Israeli children who have lost one or both parents to acts of terrorism, or whose parents are being held hostage. Their mission is to shape the futures of Israeli child survivors who have lost a parent to the Hamas terror attack or whose parent is being held hostage, helping them heal the wounds of the past and allowing them to grow and fulfill their full potential. Inspired by the Choctaw language, mythology, and traditional dress, my beadwork is handcrafted using the finest Japanese glass beads, nylon thread, and a delicate needle without the use of a bead loom. As each bead is stitched with good thoughts and intentions, the needle and thread pass through each bead several times. My Granny Lillie Nell, a traditional Choctaw dressmaker, embodied remarkable strength, a strong work ethic, and deep care for our community, crafting garments that kept our heritage alive. Guided by her spirit, I carry forward Granny's legacy in my beadwork, maintaining the thread of connection she so lovingly crafted.

Beadwork is a pillar of Indigenous design. While various tribes hold different design specialties—the Navajo, for example, are best known for their weaving and textiles—much of the Native community across North America makes use of glass beads in some aspect. Beads can be found on everything, from contemporary art and fashion designs to more traditional regalia pieces found at powwows. Indigenous people have practiced the craft of beadwork for centuries. Pre-colonization and before the prevalence of glass beads, they often adorned themselves with their own version of beads , making them through a laborious process out of bones, shells, teeth, copper, and other materials. When European settlers arrived in the s, however, they introduced glass beads—originating from Venice, Italy—to the trading markets. These glass beads, which were available in bulk and much finer in size, became favored by Native craftspeople. Today, there is a new crop of beaders who are now taking on the craft, which has been passed down through generations, and completely modernizing it.

Many people view earrings as just another accessory, but their meaning goes much deeper in the Native American culture. In many tribes, both males and females have historically had their ears pierced at a very young age as a rite of passage. Earrings are then worn for the rest of their lives as a way to pay homage to their heritage. In the past, the number of a certain type of earrings a person wore symbolized a specific achievement, such as war honors.
