In the last fifty or so years, Hollywood has brought to screens some of the most celebrated stories told in three parts. The studios too have benefited from turning one successful movie into an entire franchise with additional sequels, just look at the original Star Wars trilogy. Although, as audiences are painfully aware, not all good things come in threes. Some of the most critically adored series of all time often fail to dazzle and amaze on their third outing. The legacies of The Godfather or The Dark Knight , for example, are sometimes questioned thanks to their less popular final chapters. It appears that successfully dissecting one continuous story into thirds is no easy feat. However, director Richard Linklater proved himself as a master of the form when he, during an eighteen-year period, delivered what is arguably one of the greatest trilogies of all time. Before Sunrise , Before Sunset , and Before Midnight are a trio of films unlike any other that took the romantic drama genre to new, previously unseeable heights. What makes Before Sunrise , Before Sunset , and Before Midnight stand out amongst other trilogies is the fact that each entry in the series feels both independent of the larger narrative and simultaneously a crucial part of it. To put it simply, each film offers audiences something new and different despite resting on the same basic premise. At the heart of the story is the relationship between Jesse and Celine, this never changes over the course of the three movies. On each occasion, they venture through a singular European city, discussing their hopes, beliefs, and the meaning of their existence, all under the pressure of a ticking clock. Essentially, the entire series is one long continuous conversation. Despite this seemingly being the case, each film has its own unique identity.

So, as of the writing of this article, the Before film series consists only of three movies, and the order to watch them is straightforward.

And while the overall story took time to grow on me, by the time I was finished with them, I was riveted by these two characters and how their relationship evolves over so many years. But the Before trilogy constantly keeps you guessing and subverts your expectations in ways that are jarring in the moment but make perfect sense when you have the whole picture. Which means you can consider this a ranking of the films from worst to best if you want. From there, pretty much the entire movie is them just roaming around the city. As their seemingly short-lived romance blooms, they talk about themselves, their growing connection to each other, and their outlooks on love and life in general. The film, like its successors, is very light on plot and almost exclusively a dialogue-heavy character study. I can imagine people being hesitant to check it out because of this, let alone two more movies of the same nature.

It is the first film by Warner Independent Pictures. Linklater, Krizan, [4] Hawke, and Delpy began developing a larger budget sequel after the release of Before Sunrise , but failed to secure funding. After a period of independent work, notably inspired by Hawke's divorce from Uma Thurman , the writers came together in and incorporated elements of their screenplays, as well as scenes written during development of Before Sunrise , to create the film's screenplay. Principal photography took place entirely in Paris, and the film is considered to take place in real time. Delpy also contributed original music to the film's soundtrack. It received numerous accolades, being nominated for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay , and appeared on many publications' lists of the best films of the year, some even calling it one of the best of the decade. It was followed by a third film, Before Midnight , in

The films were all written by Linklater, along with Kim Krizan on the first film, and with Hawke and Delpy on the last two. The characters also make cameo appearances in Linklater's animated anthology film Waking Life The making of Before Midnight is chronicled in a minute documentary titled After Before , which was filmed on set. The films are considered minimal , consisting mostly of monologues and casual conversation with extended dialogue between the characters. Contrasting ideas and perspectives on life and love are detailed, with the series referencing time, self-discovery, age, loss, and parentage; it is considered an exploration of postmodern romance. Although discussed by the filmmakers and widely rumored, a fourth film is not in development. The films were distributed by Sony Pictures under their Columbia and Classics labels for the first and third films and Warner Bros. Pictures under its Independent label for the second only , while all three were produced by Castle Rock Entertainment ; Before Midnight was also produced by Venture Forth and Linklater's production company, Detour Filmproduction.
