One club that has felt the full force of the industry downturn, as well as uncertainty about the future of its premises courtesy of a pending development proposal by its sub-branch, is the Bronte RSL Club, which has been left with no other option than to close its doors indefinitely. Unbelievably, during the rebuilding it burned down again! The club provides support for junior football sides, netball teams, swimming clubs and the Bronte Surf Club. In its halcyon days there were regular dances held there where many of the locals met their respective spouses.

Save Bronte , a group formed by local residents, is voicing out their dismay at what they see as inappropriate and overdeveloped structures proposed at the former Bronte RSL site. The former Bronte RSL club has served the community since it opened in the s. However, the club was forced to close down in due to its direful financial position. With the former RSL site no longer occupied, plans of redeveloping the area have been brought up a few times before the Council by different developers. Each DA has been opposed by the Save Bronte group, which is firm in its stand to go against these types of developments. Despite the small size, Save Bronte stands firm in opposing the development. The local group raised potential issues such as increased traffic at Macpherson Street as well as the safety of children at the nearby Clovelly Public School. In its halcyon days there were regular dances held there where many of the locals met their respective spouses. At this stage, the long-term future of the Bronte RSL remains uncertain. In the meantime, with high rents, maintenance costs and insurance fees, combined with dwindling patronage, the RSL Club has little option but to cease operations, though existing businesses including a gym and physiotherapist that operate from within the RSL building will remain continue to run until the development begins. Numerous Bronte locals were said to be very sad when they heard the doors would shut, as many had fond memories of going to the club dating back to when they were youngsters.

Save Bronte highlighted concerns that the economic climate created by COVID will not allow for extra competition between businesses in Bronte, but these concerns do not appear to have been considered by Waverley Council in their approval. Waverley Council has previously spoken to The Beast about the constraints of planning law for the Local Planning Panel. While the opening of a Woolworths Metro would certainly aid less mobile Bronte residents, the community raised valid concerns about the traffic impact and disruption of the economic hierarchy in the Bronte local area. Local institutions such as the Friendly Store on Macpherson street are unlikely to be able to compete with a Woolworths Metro. Under the approved plans the metro will trade from 7 am pm, with two daily deliveries at a loading dock on Macpherson street.

A massive development application was lodged in March to turn the existing Bronte RSL site at Macpherson Street, Bronte into a high-rise building with a shopping mall below.
