After defecting from Shinra, Cloud began work as a mercenary for hire in Midgar. With his trusty broadsword cloud from final fantasy hand, he always gets the job done. An arrogant and proud swordsman at first, Cloud introduces himself to Avalanche as a former member of an elite warrior unit called SOLDIER who has turned mercenary, and uninterested in anything beyond his hired task at hand. Beneath his hardened outer persona is a softer, more caring individual who simply struggles to open up, but is striving to be a hero.

Over the course of the story, Cloud learns to accept his troubled past and adapt to his role as a leader. Cloud reappears as the protagonist in the computer-animated sequel film, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children , in which he fights a new threat composed of a trio attacking his allies while also dealing with a terminal illness called "Geostigma". He acts in a supporting role in other Compilation of Final Fantasy VII titles, and is featured in several other games in the wider Final Fantasy series. He has also made guest appearances in various titles outside the franchise, such as the Kingdom Hearts series by Square Enix and Disney and the Super Smash Bros. Cloud was designed by Tetsuya Nomura , a character artist for the Final Fantasy series, whose role expanded during the title's development to include supervision over Cloud's personality.

Cloud is of short height with a slim build. His blond hair is spiked, and in Final Fantasy VII featured one particularly large spike emerging into the air. For this reason, Cloud's spiked hair has become one of the trademarks of his appearance, although in later appearances the spikes have been toned down. Cloud was originally conceptualized with black hair, but this was changed, and his hair is meant to serve as a contrast to Sephiroth's silver hair. Cloud has blue eyes, which glow due to the Mako flowing through his body. Cloud was, however, capable of using it to great effect as a Shinra guard with no special abilities. He actually used it with such strength that he was even able to overpower Sephiroth in the Nibelheim Reactor. The clothing consists of simple pants with a no-sleeved shirt, which are indigo in color, and a belt. Cloud also wears brown boots and gauntlets with a single pauldron over his left shoulder. This is also the uniform he wears for most of his other appearances, with slight variations.

Cloud is also the only male character in Final Fantasy Tactics able to equip a Ribbonwhich is otherwise only equippable by female characters.

The only thing more evil than Sephiroth is pitting Tifa Lockhart and Aerith Gainsborough against each other. Ever since the original Final Fantasy 7 came out in , fans have debated which character Cloud should date. The first game established a classic love triangle, and now — 26 years later — Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has revived the debate by showing a never-before-seen romantic side to its spiky-haired hero. The original Final Fantasy 7 did little to stoke genuine love between Cloud and his love interests. Although he has various moments where he can express interest in either girl, choosing one over the other often resulted in jealousy or hurt feelings from the rejected party. Fortunately for those of us who adore both of them, the developers left these parts out of Final Fantasy 7 Remake , and the young women get to share a loving and supportive friendship. Rebirth continues this general approach, and further develops the bonds between Tifa and Aerith.
