Hot, dry conditions coupled with winds have resulted in increased fire activity across the Southeast Fire Centre. Thirty-one new fires have been detected since July 30, the majority of them suspected to be caused by lightning that moved through the region this past weekend. Existing fires are also exhibiting more intense fire behaviour resulting in smoke plumes and, cranbrook forest fires some cases, visible flames. While the St. Smoke has noticeably been drifting from the southwest into Cranbrook, as the Kamma Creek wildfire approximately 27 kilometres west of Moyie Lake has doubled in size and is now burning at hectares as of Monday Aug. Meanwhile, the Lum Creek wildfire near Fisher Peak also continues to grow, with highly visible plumes of smoke during peak burning hours. That wildfire was discovered on July 30 and is currently estimated at approximately hectares, also suspected to be lightning-caused. East of Elko, the North Lodgepole Creek wildfire is burning at an estimated 10 hectares. Detected on July 31, it is suspected to be lightning-caused.
