Throughout Ed and Al Elric's quest to regain a part of themselves they lost, they meet a number of people who help them feel whole again. Because a person is more than just their alchemical makeup, Ed and Al find that a person can never judge a book by its cover — whether human, homunculus or otherwise. Ed and Al end up giving way more for the good of others than anyone could hope to give them back in return, showing that the law of equivalent exchange only applies to alchemy , not to the alchemists themselves.
