The hit series' writers knew it would be a place full of nostalgia by the end, so they based it on a location filled with their own good memories. A classic Irish-style pub, MacLaren's was owned in the series by Carl MacLaren, who was often seen bartending or occasionally caring for a drunk Ted and co. Other employees included Wendy the Waitress, and Doug the bouncer—both very familiar with the HIMYM friend group and their preferred booth near the bar.
