The coming-of-age joyride of Cootie, a foot-tall man who escapes to experience the beauty and contradictions of the real world.
Cootie is sheltered. His adoptive parents Mike Epps and Carmen Ejogo keep him cooped up in the house for fear that when people discover him, he will be ogled, tokenized, and eventually disposed of. They keep him fearful with headlines of the giants who came before him, who now exist only in graveyards, science labs, or museums. What ensues is an absolute romp of a coming-of-age story, chock full of Cali culture, first love, friendship, and biting social examination. The foot-tall gimmick runs the gamut of physical comedy and day-to-day hilarity. His naivety causes us to view him much like his parents do, with protective care.

This weird and wonderful story of a 13ft teen is vigorous, clever and fun. From such a premise, you can go anywhere and creator Boots Riley — in only his second ever screen outing, since his film Sorry to Bother You debuted in — does. Eventually, his yearning for friendship — and fast food — overwhelms him and out he steps, to the horror of his aunt and uncle Carmen Ejogo and Mike Epps who know what the dangers outside are for young Black men, let alone those in giant form. Through them all we get not just a sweet coming-of-age story for the isolated boy-man but interrogations of race relations, capitalism and the cracks rapidly opening into abysses between the haves and have nots. Even before you get to Goggins dancing in his pants to Wichita Lineman. The show moves surely from light to dark and back again. When he and Flora Olivia Washington, rounding out an ensemble cast full of offbeat characters that somehow synchronise perfectly finally start going out, they have an extended sex scene that is outstripped in its bizarreness — because all the problems you are imagining are there and must be solved — only by its tenderness. It wakes you up, makes you alert, makes you engage with it in a way few dramas do by giving you something boldly, undeniably different. And vigorous and clever and fun and performed by a young cast who seem to be already at the top of their games. And if it has more ideas in it that it has time to develop fully — well, what a complaint to have. Diamond shoes too tight — all of that.

By Daniel D'Addario. To work out, he bench-presses an entire car; his aunt and uncle Mike Epps and Carmen Ejogo , raising him in their Oakland home despite being people of more typical stature, fret over how much food it takes to keep their nephew alive. Epps and Ejogo play their roles with striking sensitivity, imbuing a sense of the stakes for Cootie from the first. They have a lot to be concerned about. Cootie is only now entering the world through contact with new friends and, in particular, a love interest named Flora Olivia Washington. Their pairing has a fundamental sweetness to it, with matching neuroses and superpowers ; nailing down the emotional beats here allows Riley to range farther and farther afield. Given more running time and Amazon-scale resources, the director dares greatly — the simple fact of integrating a double-sized Jerome into physical space with his co-stars is a feat worth applauding.
The Illuminerdi is proud to present an exclusive inside look at the new TV series and some of the actors we may see on the show. The writer shared some details on the series, which had not found a streaming home at that point in time. Jharrel Jerome is playing the lead. Jerome is most well known for his performances in Moonlight and When They See Us, the latter of which he won an Emmy for. The production is looking to shoot in Oakland and New Orleans in the first quarter of Jharrel Jerome will play the lead character, a foot Black man named Cootie who was born that height, tragically killing his mother in childbirth. He was kept inside all of his life by his adoptive mother, who sought to shelter Cootie from a world which she knew would hate and fear her son. Eventually, Cootie breaks out and becomes something of a local superhero, but a villain to the masses. Carmen Ejogo has appeared in the Alien and Harry Potter franchises. She gives great speeches, and moves those around her to work on social causes.

Prime Video's I'm A Virgo is a surreal comedy that came with a series title to match, but just like the coming-of-age story, I'm A Virgo's title has some seriously deep meaning behind it. From the mind of Boots Riley, who brought the indie satire Sorry To Bother You to life back in , I'm A Virgo is another representation of race relations and contemporary capitalism following the story of the foot-tall young man named Cootie. I'm A Virgo documents Cootie as he outgrows the hidden, sheltered existence his adoptive parents subject him to and is inclined to explore life outside his home as a giant Black man. However, life outside the safety of his home is soon proven to be a series of complex and socially entrenched catastrophes underlined by America's race relations and capitalist culture. His coming-of-age story is made even more difficult as Cootie's giant height adds to his potential as a Black man to stick out like a sore thumb in certain spaces. Boots Riley's purposeful examination of what Cootie's life would look like in I'm A Virgo becomes a surrealistic adventure full of deep and insightful moments, ending with a full-on analysis of society and starting at its very own series title.
