We aim to abolish a racially biased criminal legal system that violates basic human rights and an immigration system that every year tears hundreds of thousands of immigrants with convictions from their homes, their families, and their communities. We fight to end the current era of unprecedented mass deportation via interconnected strategies that attack the two systems at multiple points — strengthening immigrant defense through training and expert advice ; challenging unfair laws through impact litigation ; shaping just policies through advocacy ; and empowering communities and advocates through alliance building and education , and changing negative perceptions about immigrants through communications and messaging. We help lay the groundwork for a day when the criminal and immigration laws of the United States respect and uphold the human rights of everyone.

The Immigrant Defense Project IDP was founded over 20 years ago to combat an emerging human rights crisis: the targeting of immigrants for mass imprisonment and deportation. As this crisis has continued to escalate, IDP has remained steadfast in fighting for fairness and justice for all immigrants caught at the intersection of the racially biased U. IDP fights to end the current era of unprecedented mass criminalization, detention and deportation through a multipronged strategy including advocacy, litigation, legal advice and training, community defense, grassroots alliances, and strategic communications. We orchestrate the strategy behind litigation in the Supreme Court and Circuit Courts including 5 recent victories and challenge unfair laws to expand our reach exponentially. We advocate for laws and policies that protect human rights and fight criminalization, including some of the first successful policies against honoring ICE detainers, and our current pardon and ICE Out of the Courts campaigns. We support communities and grassroots groups by providing valuable resources to defend their rights against ICE and during immigration proceedings, and by executing campaigns to keep loved ones home and families together. We highlight the systemic injustices underlying the deportation system, counter the demonization of immigrants and people with criminal convictions, and work to change the conversation by exposing the human toll of unjust policies.

Our policy work is grounded in the belief that all people, including those with convictions, deserve equal rights and that people should not be perpetually punished on the basis of having a criminal record. IDPs work includes ending the entanglement between immigration and the police, building strategic alliances with criminal justice advocates, and supporting directly-impacted communities by providing information , analysis, and strategy towards expanding rights and transforming the criminal and immigration systems.
