TV comedy fans will know Rizwan from his, shall we say, unconventional approach on Taskmaster.

Joyfully bucking the trend for realistic comedy-dramas, Mawaan Rizwan has successfully harnessed his on-stage silliness into a delightfully bonkers sitcom. To set the surreal undertone, we first see him battling through the rainforest for what turns out to be a meeting with his boss in a marketing agency, charged with promoting a new yoghurt for men. While this is great fun, what keeps you invested is the relationship between Jamma and his more strait-laced boyfriend Guy, played by the ever-watchable Russell Tovey. Guy, a therapist, is clearly yearning for a more mature relationship but Jamma literally feels the walls closing in on him when the notion of settling down is raised. However, on screen, nothing is likely to upstage Mawaan. The comic was surely always destined to be a star even without a vehicle such as this — but as a cheerful expression of his unique comic sensibilities, Juice has plenty of zest. Juice is based partially upon Rizwan's real life, [3] [4] though Rizwan has stated the show is "definitely fictional", [5] and features his real-life mother and brother as his family in the show. Juice follows Jamma, a young gay man who is navigating commitment issues in his relationship with his boyfriend, Guy, and attention issues in his relationship with his family. Guy contrasts with Jamma's high octane personality; he is a calmer, older man with an established career as a therapist and a desire for his relationship with Jamma to become more concrete. Jamma's mother, Farida, is a former movie star who now manages the Megacentre, a community centre for underprivileged people of all ages. Both Farida and Jamma's younger brother, Isaac, often upstage and outshine him, much to Jamma's dismay. The title of the show was inspired by Rizwan's mother, who used to say "If life gives you mangoes, make mango juice. Juice was commissioned in following a successful pilot created the previous autumn. Although the show has not yet been renewed for a second series, Rizwan has expressed interest in creating one. Comedian Mawaan Rizwan is wacky, witty and weird in this surreally entertaining series, which also stars Russell Tovey. Fans of The Mighty Boosh will want to check it out. It delves into the mind of a cartoonish millennial named Jamma, played with intentionally excruciating hamminess by Rizwan. Jamma dances and gesticulates through life blithely, often trying to do the right thing but rarely doing anything other than making whatever situation he happens to be in worse. Juice is based on a show Rizwan mounted at the Edinburgh festival fringe in , and, unlike so many other queer comedies, it is not about a quest for acceptance in any traditional sense.
