Manchester birding forum

I've just moved up from London to Manchester and I'm keen to know the best areas around for birding. Today I spent a few hours at Clayton Vale - a beautiful stretch of woodland that follows a section of river, which I would have expected to be teeming with life but was fairly disappointing. Maybe it's the wrong time of year? Or the wrong time of day I was there from 12 til 2 on a blisteringly hot day But are any of them particularly good for birds? Any regional 'specialities', perhaps? I don't know the area that well - there are some others here who do, who'll certainly be able to help you. Dove Stone is very good for upland birds eg Ring Ouzel. Woolston Eyes near Warrington has breeding Black-necked Grebes you'll need to buy a permit but they are not expensive. I'd definitely recommend you have a browse on this forum: www.
