I envy everybody that is about to play the Mass Effect trilogy for the first time with the Legendary Edition. If I could wipe one series from my mind and play it over again fresh, it would be Mass Effect. The answer is yes, you absolutely must. Think of it like how Game of Thrones always had different humans as the baddies, but the ultimate threat was the White Walkers. In the first Mass Effect game, you have six squadmates. During the game, you will have to choose between two different squadmates to decide which one lives and which one dies. It is impossible to save both. If you skip to Mass Effect 2, the game chooses for you, based on the gender of your Shepard. However, a third squadmate can also die in the first Mass Effect - this character returns for a major role in Mass Effect 3; or at least, they do if you keep them alive. If you skip Mass Effect, the game automatically kills them off. This is a hugely popular character too, and their replacement is very meh. You are not getting the true Mass Effect experience if you kill this character off. But what if you want to start at Mass Effect 3? What happens then? First off, what the heck is going on in that twisted little melon of yours?

However, the game does give you some freedom when it comes to mission order. Each act of the adventure has an abundance of quests to take on, and it doesn't matter which you do first or which you save for later. Yet, playing each mission in a specific order can improve a playthrough in various ways. For instance, if you complete quests in the optimal sequence, you lower the risk of losing characters by the end of the game. Plus, your narrative experience can be enhanced simply by doing certain missions at certain times. So, here is the order in which you should complete all of the main content. However, there is an optimal order that improves the narrative experience and keeps characters alive.
To do this we have included a box at the bottom of every page telling you where you should go next. Several factors were used to determine this order, including story context, opportunities for unique dialouge, and conserving ship fuel in Mass Effect 2 and 3. A routine shakedown run at the human colony of Eden Prime turns into something far greater, as a terrifying force makes a play for a discovery of galactic importance. Surviving the vision burned into their brain by the Prothean Beacon, Shepard has discovered that the culprit behind the Geth attack on Eden Prime is Saren Arterius, a Spectre with near-unlimited resources and authority. They travel to the Citadel to convince the Council of Saren's guilt, picking up several new alien Squad Mates along the way.

One of the many things people love about the Mass Effect games is their deep lore. The universe Commander Shepard and Pathfinder Ryder inhabit feels like a real-world with real alien species. While the games themselves deserve credit for that, they can't build the entire universe on their own. There's an abundance of comics, novels, and side stories set in the same universe that help fill in many of the gaps in the story. So many, in fact, that working out when everything takes place can be tricky. Don't worry, though; here are all of them in chronological order.
