MO2 was initially started by Tannin, the creator of the original Mod Organizer, to take care of bit games such as Fallout 4. It is now actively maintained by a team of developers, from all backgrounds, and is now able to do much more than Tannin ever envisioned. The installer version is usually preferred for ease of installation. The installer can still be used to create a portable installation of MO2. Starting out with MO2 can be a bit intimidating. Several things about the tool may be unintuitive. There are some hidden features that affect how you mod your games.

Mods are a big draw for PC gamers. Steam makes it easy to install and manage mods, and now that same ease-of-use is coming to the Epic Games Store. MechWarrior 5 has a vibrant and active mod community over on Nexus Mods, but those mods required users to have some rudimentary knowledge of game files in order to know where to place those mods. This might just be a quirk of MechWarrior 5 and not something to expect when other Epic games get mod support. There are two mods that are absolute must-haves right now since they fix known bugs that the developer just hasn't gotten around to fixing yet. Without it, a memory leak can cause performance degradation and serious frame rate loss.

I waited many years to finally play MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, and it makes me sad how quickly I've moved on from it.
