A respected mental health campaigner, Ruby has a particular interest in how modern urban life challenges us. This island experience is a chance for Ruby to explore how solitude compares to the challenges of busy contemporary lives — as well as being a highly entertaining and insightful experience as Ruby survives totally alone in the wild. Before heading to the island, Ruby will be meeting with Joanna, for some first-hand advice to help prepare for the island experience. Ruby will also leave with a letter from Joanna, not to be opened until she is on the island. A camera crew will initially follow Ruby — as she is trained in a series of complex survival skills from an ex-Army survivalist specialist.

I like her instantly — even at this hour in the morning, she makes me laugh. She has a wonderful speaking voice — a mix of outspoken and unsure.

Ruby Wax is to be stranded on an uninhabited tropical island in a new Channel 5 survival series, British Comedy Guide can exclusively reveal. With the working title Ruby Wax Castaway , the two hour-long episodes will follow the comedian-turned-mental health campaigner, who recently spent time receiving treatment in a psychiatric hospital, as she documents her life on the island off the coast of Madagascar, with only body-cams and a handheld camera for her to talk to. Before heading to the island, Wax has trained in survival skills with an ex-Army specialist and met with Joanna Lumley , who made the BBC series Girl Friday in , in which the Absolutely Fabulous star spent 10 days on the deserted island of Tsarabanjina near Madagascar.
