After attaching a ground wire to [the plug] there was spark, but not a good, bright blue color, and not the good "snap" I like to hear.

I have a Mercury 4 hp single cylinder that has no spark. I filed the points, soldered on new wires as the insulation was cracked. I had spark initially and then nothing. I did some checking and followed a how to video and have determined the coil is dead by checking with an ohm meter. The coil is expensive enough. But the cost of the stator far exceeds the value of this motor. Thank you for the article. In other words, a simpler explanation how to test it. Electrical problems confound me and humble my ego quickly. Unfortunately youtube doesnt have this how to for me. CDI furnishes a brief troubleshooting procedure. I have attached their PDF below. Cleaned out the screen with a toothbrush and all was well. If you intend to perform your own service on your motor, the purchase of the factory service manual is a very good investment. The dealer in Canada said I have a bad stator part A21 or possibly a bad switch box part A7. If you happen to come across a good explanation of how the two stator coils are used with regard to the spark voltage generation and the ignition timing, I would like to read it. The problem is very intermittent and has only happened a few times both of which were at the end of the day after a long hard run which made me think a heat soak hits it hence my though process with the stator as they don't react well with heat I may be being to smart for my own good and just let you guys guide me through what I should do, but in this case, looks like I would have needed to go down this path or catch fire someday soon. In my case, when the motor is cold it idles strong.. I have one coming, but it won't be here for another few days, and the boat is in a buddies boat house, apart. So, once again, I've learned a lot of new things, and have enjoyed the process. Not even close to enough power to get up on plane again. Still, I would toss a black stator as far away as I could. Can anyone confrim which part number is correct?
