He is the second apprentice of Master Xehanort , having been created from extracting the being Darkness from Ventus 's heart , the source of the Unversed , and later, a member of the real Organization XIII. Four years prior, Ventus served as Master Xehanort's original apprentice. Ventus was unable to use his darkness, and was knocked unconscious by the Heartless. Master Xehanort then proceeded to use his Keyblade to unlock Ventus's heart, extracting the darkness within and resulting in an orb of dark energy forming into a young boy in a mask who is then given the name "Vanitas" by Master Xehanort. When Vanitas destroyed them however they simply were re-absorbed into Vanitas and he felt the very pain he inflicted onto the creatures, creating even more negativity and more Unversed that. When a newborn heart came in contact with Ventus' fractured heart, he also directly contacts Vanitas' heart. This caused Vanitas to receive the face that the heart belonged to. To allow both Ventus and Vanitas to grow without destroying each other, Xehanort took Ventus to the Land of Departure to be trained by Eraqus while Vanitas remained with Xehanort. After Ventus leaves, however, Vanitas starts to miss him greatly, and he wonders why they were separated from each other. This causes him to feel miserable and anxious about his future without Ventus, and the more he thinks about these questions, the more anxious, irritated, and lonely he feels, and the more Unversed form. In a rage, Vanitas begins to destroy the Unversed, creating a cycle of perpetuating pain and suffering. Vanitas agrees to the plan and becomes Master Xehanort's apprentice.

Vanitas will not attack often and will mainly attempt to dodge the Terra's attacks, but certain abilities such as Chaos Rave will allow Terra to stay on him.

Vanitas becomes aware of his existence, and he soon starts questioning why he was born, and every time he feels something, an Unversed is created. Irritated, Vanitas destroys it with his Keyblade , but every time he destroys an Unversed, he himself feels strong physical pain running through his body, and after the Unversed is destroyed, the pain and negative feeling returns to Vanitas's mind, which adds more to his irritation and causes the birth of more Unversed. When Sora 's newborn heart comes in contact with Ventus's fractured heart, he also directly contacts Vanitas's heart.

After Master Xehanort views the battle between Terra and Aqua as part of their Mark of Mastery exam, he leaves the room to find a hidden Vanitas awaiting him. With Vanitas' defeat, the Unversed cease to exist once more. Cartwheel is recommended in terms of avoiding it. One major advantage to fighting with Mickey is that he will grant Ventus the usage of a powerful offensive ability, Burst of Faith. Master Xehanort then proceeded to use his Keyblade to unlock Ventus's heart, extracting the darkness within and resulting in an orb of dark energy forming into a young boy in a mask who is then given the name "Vanitas" by Master Xehanort. Vanitas prepares to eliminate the Keyblade master, but Sora returned Ventus' heart in his body, waking him up after Eleven years. Master Xehanort may also combine the two attacks, assaulting Terra with a fast-paced physical combo and ending it with a Blizzard spell that can freeze Terra, leaving him open to both Vanitas and Master Xehanort's attacks. Ventus in turn tells Vanitas that they are the same and Vanitas would be returning to his heart. As such they both became full beings a while ago. The Keyblade is not his to bear.

Kingdom Hearts is a video game series near and dear to my heart, and Vanitas is my favorite character. Tragic and bleak. Vanitas is defined as the embodiment of Darkness for much of the series.

He also has great durability and endurance, surviving most of his battles while taking little to no bodily damage, able to make instant recoveries. The two converse about Ventus, and Vanitas claims that Ventus's performance was weak, and he still needs to "break that loser in". Behind his mask, he looks identical to Sora, although he possesses golden-yellow eyes, jet-black hair, paler skin and a taller, more muscular build. Thankfully, newborn Sora saved him. Dives underground, then leaps out while swinging his weapon and scatters fireballs around himself. There's still unverse around Him getting hit literally creates more and they're extensions of his being.
