Veeam full backup
In some situations, running active full backups periodically may not be an option. Active full backups are resource-intensive and consume a considerable amount of network bandwidth.
In some cases, you need to regularly create a full backup. For example, your corporate backup job may require that you create a full backup on weekend and run incremental backup on work days. To let you conform to these requirements, Veeam Agent lets you create active full backups. When Veeam Agent performs active full backup, it produces a full backup file and adds this file to the backup chain. The active full backup resets the backup chain. All incremental backup files use the latest active full backup file as a new starting point.
Veeam full backup
If you back up to tape a reverse incremental chain, the tape job will always copy the full backup. You must configure one or more media pools with the necessary media set and retention settings. You must load tapes to the tape device and configure the target media pool so that it has access to them. At the Name step, specify a job name and description. Click Next. At the Backups step, select backups that you want to write to tape with the tape job. Click Add and select the necessary backups. You can choose backups from Backup Jobs or Backup Repositories. Veeam will display a warning informing about backup chain options. Click Latest to archive only the latest backup chain to tape. Click All to archive all available backup files. At the Media Pool step choose media pool for full backups. From the Media pool list, choose a media pool that will be used for archiving full backup files. You can select a media pool or a GFS media pool depending on retention policy you need.

The virtual full method allows you to transform forever forward incremental backup chains created by source backup and backup copy jobs to save them to tapes. The forever forward incremental chain always keeps on disk one full backup followed by a fixed number of increments. The full backup is constantly rebuilt: as new increments appear, the older ones are injected into the full. Unlike disk backups, tape archives are static: tape jobs cannot rebuild backups once they are written to tape. Also, the standard backup to tape scheme archiving new restore points during each tape session cannot be used: then the tape archive will have one full backup and an endless chain of increments all of which would be required for restore. The virtual full mechanism creates a periodic synthesized full backup on tape. The periodic fulls split the forever incremental backup chain into shorter series of files that can be effectively stored to tapes.
Many times when I explain how Veeam backups work, people have questions about how data is moved for incremental backups. In addition, there are frequent questions about the differences between incremental and differential backups. First, there are no differential backups with Veeam. A differential backup is somewhat of a carry-over from the disk-to-tape era where there is a full backup with a comprehensive collection of the changes. A restore would have a full backup tape and a second tape with all changes in the form of a differential backup. This would help in avoiding tape changes multiple tapes required for a restore , which is another relic from the disk-to-tape era.

You can create an ad-hoc full backup — active full backup, and add it to the backup chain on the backup repository. The active full backup resets the backup chain. All subsequent incremental backups use the active full backup as a starting point. The previously used full backup will remain on the backup repository until it is removed from the backup chain according to the retention policy. Keep in mind that the active full backup operation will be performed only on those computers that received the command from the backup server. Keep in mind that you cannot start active full backup for protection groups for pre-installed Veeam Agents and their members.

A full backup file is created on Sunday, incremental backup files are created on Monday and Tuesday, and an active full backup is created on Wednesday.
