Vicki Vale is a beautiful prize-winning photojournalist who attempted to uncover the secret of the mysterious Batman and inadvertently became the object of obsession for the Joker. Vicki spent several weeks photographing the aftermath of the Corto Maltese Revolution. Vicki joined the Gotham Globe where she teamed up with reporter Alexander Knox to track down the mysterious Batman. Vicki invited Alexander as her "plus one" for Bruce Wayne's charity benefit at Wayne Manor in the hope that they might get a lead on the existence of Batman from one of the guests, particularly Commissioner Gordon , and did not suspect that their host for the night was, in fact, Batman. Vicki and Alexander found themselves lost inside the cavernous Wayne Manor, and eventually ended up in Bruce's Armory. Unbeknownst to Vicki and Alexander, a bemused Bruce quietly followed them as they made several snide comments about his armory collection. Bruce then introduced himself to a surprised Vicki as he had told her during the party earlier that he didn't know who Bruce Wayne was.

In the DC Universe and beyond, Batman is one of the most secretive characters around Bruce Wayne has made a name for himself by keeping things hidden, even from his most trusted allies. Naturally, that put him at odds with Gotham's top reporter, Vicki Vale, who essentially made it her job to uncover Batman's secrets. Vicki was much like Lois Lane , who was fixated on Superman and determined to discover his secret identity. Similarly, Vicki made a considerable effort to uncover Batman's true identity, sensing a connection between the Dark Knight and Bruce Wayne. Of course, things became rather tense when the original Batwoman appeared, rivaling Vicki for Batman's affections in 's Batman , by Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff. Soon, however, Vicki had returned, more determined than ever to prove Bruce Wayne and Batman were the same person. Due to Vicki's curiosity, Bruce continued to push her away, pursuing relationships with other women. Vicki maintained most of her Pre-Crisis characteristics, including her attachment to Bruce Wayne and her overly inquisitive nature. Both Vicki and Batman were infected with Scarecrow's fear toxin, only saved by the timely intervention of Tim Drake.

This is no small feat, and it got us to thinking about Vale and her portrayal over the many decades of her existence as a character. Though we know a much different Batwoman today , in her original incarnation, she was a dynamic circus performer who sought to wed our Caped Crusader, and her sheer determination sent the easily distracted Vale in directions unknown. Vale still made appearances on occasion, though her role was reduced to the point of being nearly nonexistent — that is, until it became literally nonexistent. In the mids, editor Julius Schwartz took over the Bat-line and opted to remove characters he felt were extraneous. Of course, that all brings us to 's Batman , in which Vale was chosen to appear as the love interest of Bruce Wayne, much as she had in her early appearances. Batman is a really interesting movie, but, for the most part, that has nothing to do with Vale from a character standpoint.
