In this interview, we discuss the downing of flight MH17 and how he helped discover the true identity of the Russian agents behind the Salisbury poisonings of Sergei and Yulia Skirpal. Peter McCormack: Aric, how are you? Peter McCormack: Thank you for coming on. So, you work for Bellingcat? Peter McCormack: Very interesting organisation, obviously doing some really important investigative work. What's it like working there? Aric Toler: Well, it's pretty great.

I mean yeah, this is, I talked earlier about how Putin won't go and kill journalists, aric toler Maybe local governors, maybe local police, maybe Chechen warlords, maybe private businessmen will. In court records, the FBI said, somewhat vaguely, that it found Teixeira through social media. Bizarrely, he said, the documents were posted in Discord channels focused on the Minecraft computer game and a Filipino YouTube celebrity. Toler traced the original source of the documents back even further, to a Discord server called Thug Shaker Central. But this was a vexing and very competitive target and, you know, we just thought, Why not? Thus began the wild chase for the leaker. One of those screenshots showed a different handle he had used, J. Social media accounts led them to Teixeira, and importantly, to a picture of him in a military uniform in the kitchen of his childhood home. The countertops in that photo matched the surface the leaked documents had been photographed on. Once the team had identified Teixiera as a person of interest, they dispatched reporters to his house in Massachusetts. By that time, the authorities had already identified him and were preparing to make an arrest.

In the days since nine people including the gunman were shot and killed at a mall in Allen, Texas, investigators and journalists have been looking to trace the online footprint of the shooter, named by authorities as year-old Mauricio Garcia. The United States has a long and troubling history of mass shootings, with many of those who carry out such attacks leaving a trail of digital evidence. This case appears to be no different. The account also espoused far-right viewpoints and contained pictures of Garcia showing off at least two Nazi tattoos. What follows is a breakdown of the content of the OK page, how we found it and how all available evidence points to it being tied to the shooter.

But just because we've done it, doesn't mean everyone else is immune to criticism and, yeah. The Russian support has gone from extremely obvious artillery attacks, tanks, all that stuff, in , '15, and now it's down to just very relatively covert technical support, along with financial support, and political support, of course. If you are a journalist or a gay man or woman out in the oblast, out in the regions, out in the middle of nowhere, you could just be kidnapped and murdered and nothing may ever happen. The whole Syrian thing is just a complete mess, with And she did die and that was an accidental thing. Not just Europe, central Asia, the middle East, the caucus. Pretty much all of us work from wherever we live, though we also have an office at the Hague, in the Netherlands, but most of us work from home. Aric Toler: So, yeah, obviously there's this hypocrisy, but just because America invades countries unilaterally and commits human rights abuses and all that stuff, doesn't mean we can't criticise Russia for doing the same thing. I'm with the big hodgepodge of Russian, Ukraine, which is equally politicised, in it's own way, but the Syria chemical attack question, I can't even imagine, it being a nightmare to approach from the outside, and not knowing where to start, because everything is again, extremely Aric Toler: I guess. They talked about how they wanted to see the famous meters Spire or whatever. Aric Toler: You know, so high in the ground. You can't trust what's online, who cares? So then that's where we come in.

But still if you're the average person living and a working class person in Moscow or Petersburg or whatever, life's much better now than it was in the '92, ' We have a handful of things. Do you ever feel like, "Well, come on, how can you-". I'm trying to remember who it was, but it was written like a nationalist speech that you protect the Motherland, don't go against the Motherland. So I have, I think-. Aric Toler: Really, really weird, yeah. Peter McCormack: Thank you for coming on. It's a combination of literal civil war re-enactors, like Russian civil war, not American civil war, re-enactors who like to dress up and play on the weekends, and then they got actual real men, they played behind.
