Final Fantasy 16 tells the epic story of how humanity defies its fate as tools for the despotic god Ultima to use to create his paradise. As we follow Clive on his journey to destroy the Mothercrystals and end Ultima's reign, we learn a lot about Valisthea and the land's magic. Final Fantasy 16's ending is open-ended and ambiguous. While there are elements that definitely happen, ff16 end, ff16 end of the ending is open to interpretation.

Warning: full spoilers follow for the events of Final Fantasy This is a game that features massive monsters beating the heck out of each other, after all, and so naturally the finale had to go super size. Long ago, the god Ultima and his kin created magic. It allowed them to flourish, but it also came at a price: the world-destroying Blight. The gods were powerless to stop it, and so sixteen survivors fled to a new world: Valisthea. But the Blight followed them to this new land, and so the gods realised there was only one option: to build a whole new world.

The last half of the game holds some huge revelations for Clive and his friends, right up until the climactic ending. In what is seemingly a tradition for the series , the actual ending of Final Fantasy 16 is a bit ambiguous. Ultima is a being from another world, where he and his people created magic that helped their world flourish. Here Ultima split himself into copies that transformed into Mothercrystals, designed to suck the aether from the land, aether Ultima would need to revive his people. At the same time, he created humans for the sole purpose of birthing the perfect vessel named Mythos, a vessel that has the power to cast the spell Raise. Origin is the tool that Ultima plans to use to cast Raise, after taking control of Clive as a vessel. A giant crystal known as Origin has appeared in the sky, which is the original ship Ultima traveled to Valisthea on, which he plans to feed aether into and use to cast Raise. Clive, Joshua, and Dion are the only ones traveling to Origin, with Dion transforming into Baham to ferry the brothers and conserve their energy. Of course, the trio are promptly attacked by Fallen forces once they reach the structure, but Dion manages to blow a hold in the side of the crystal, creating an opening for Clive and Joshua. After confronting Ultima, Dion is eventually defeated and plummets into the depths. Presumably, this means Dion is dead, but the game never outright confirms or denies that. Clive and Joshua, after being defeated, climb through the rest of Origin to reach its central room, and confront Ultima again.

Without magick, Aether would stop being drained from the world, and the Blight would stop spreading.

The protagonist quickly discovers that he is, in truth, the Dominant of Ifrit, which causes a tragic event and sees him exiled. As a mercenary operating away from his home, the hero will see himself directly involved with the multiple wars that plague the land of Valisthea. All the fights happen for the same reasons: nations dispute full control over the aether-abundant Mothercrystals spread across the continent. Ultima came to the planet in search of a large amount of aether and a being capable of absorbing Eikons — in this case, Clive. During the ending of Final Fantasy 16 , it is learned that the Mothercrystals in Valisthea are actually aspects of Ultima that were separated from its main body in order to harvest aether from the land.

In his final moments, Joshua gives Clive the full power of the Phoenix so that he can become Ifrit Risen on his own. Of course, the protagonist has other ideas, with the players helping to put an end to these dastardly plans. Now that Clive had absorbed the power of every Eikon, the Mythos had almost reached full potential. With all the gods combined into a single consciousness, and Origin filled with all the required aether, the spell to create the new world is primed. Either the pair of brothers will become the Mythos that Ultima and the gods crave or the Logos, a corrupted Mythos that is driven by its own will. The city is revealed to be built on top of Origin, the ark in which the gods came to Valisthea a thousand years ago. The lack of divine guidance has allowed humanity to control their will and, in turn, weakened the powers of gods like Ultima, which makes it possible for Clive to take the fight to this evil being with his friends and family by his side.
